Product Features

Dental Health: Marketed to provide "Dental Protection" by helping to reduce plaque and tartar buildup through the mechanical action of chewing.
Flavor/Appearance: The chews have a reddish-brown, textured appearance, which often indicates added flavorings or a specific drying process.
Material: Made from rawhide, typically the inner layer of cow or horse hides.

Safety Considerations

While rawhide is a popular chew, veterinarians often recommend supervision due to several risks:

Choking & Blockages: Large pieces can be swallowed whole, potentially causing choking or dangerous intestinal blockages that may require surgery.
Digestibility: Rawhide is generally considered to have poor digestibility; it can swell in the stomach and cause gastrointestinal distress.
Chemical Processing: Hides are often treated with various chemicals (such as hydrogen peroxide or lime) during manufacturing to clean and whiten them.
Bacteria: Improperly processed rawhide can carry bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli, which can affect both dogs and the humans handling the treats.

Usage Tips

Supervision: Always watch your dog while they are chewing to ensure they do not swallow large chunks.
Size Matters: Ensure the chew is appropriate for your dog's size; if it becomes small enough to swallow whole, take it away.
Alternatives: If your dog is an aggressive "gulper," consider safer alternatives like natural rubber toys or non-rawhide dental chews.
